Oakwell Hall Country Park in Birstall opens new cafe and toilets

Oakwell Hall Country Park, Birstall, has opened a new cafe in the park’s former visitor centre.

The Countryside Cafe, which opened last weekend, will be selling hot and cold food and drinks, snacks and “luxurious” ice creams visitors can eat in or take away, seven days a week (10am-4pm weekdays, 9.30am-4pm weekends). The reopening of the building has enabled the toilets to be brought back into use when the cafe is open.

When the building, opposite the Lower End car park, was a visitor centre it had a collection of images, information boards and artefacts relating to the area’s mining history. The items will be displayed on the walls of the indoor seating area.

The park’s Oak Tree Cafe, set in the grounds of the park’s Elizabethan Oakwell Hall, will remain open.

Colin Parr, Kirklees Council‘s Strategic Director for Environment and Climate Change said: “I’m delighted we have been able to bring a building back into use that not only retains some of its original purpose – providing history on the local area – but offers an additional facility to the park. The opening of the Countryside Café will further enhance the experience for visitors to the historic Oakwell Hall Country Park.”

Oakwell Hall Country Park will be running an Easter Adventure Trail on Sunday, April 24 (12pm-4pm). Tickets are £2. For more information click here.
