01.07.2021 – 16:39 UTC

SmartLynx Airlines (6Y, Riga) will expand its cargo division by converting four of its in-house A321-200s into dedicated freighters, Cargo Facts has reported.

The Latvian ACMI/charter specialist, which until recently operated exclusively in the passenger market, confirmed it would convert YL-LDB (msn 2342), YL-LDA (msn 2903), YL-LCZ (msn 2912), and YL-LCX (msn 3191). All four aircraft are leased from GTLK – State Transport Leasing and are between 14 and 16.7 years of age. They have been barely active since October-November 2020 and are currently parked at Riga, Tallinn Lennart Meri, and Vilnius airports.

GTLK signed the P2F contract with Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) in May 2021, with three units entering to enter the conversion line by the end of 2021 and the fourth one in 2022.

SmartLynx Airlines operates seven A321-200s and three A320-200s, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. SmartLynx Airlines Estonia operates a further two A320-200s and SmartLynx Airlines Malta – six A320-200s and one A321-200.

SmartLynx Airlines Malta (LYX, Malta Int’l) took delivery of its first widebody aircraft, an A330-300, on May 31, 2021, Skyliner Aviation has reported.

9H-SMD (msn 1382) is an 8.3-year-old aircraft owned by CDB Aviation. It was ferried from Birmingham Int’l to Malta Int’l on May 31 but has yet to be inducted into service. The ex-Singapore Airlines and Evelop Airlines Airbus widebody will be operated in a makeshift freighter configuration for the time being. However, SmartLynx Airlines said earlier this year that as passenger demand returns, it would eventually return the jet to its original passenger configuration.

SmartLynx Airlines Malta plans to induct a total of five A330-300s, including at least four dry-leased from CDB Aviation, by the end of the month. The airline’s current fleet comprises three A320-200s and one A321-200s; it is also due to induct two A321-200(P2F)s shortly. Sister carriers SmartLynx Airlines (6Y, Riga) and SmartLynx Airlines Estonia (MYX, Tallinn Lennart Meri) together operate a further…

SmartLynx Malta to add five A330s

17.05.2021 – 11:39 UTC

SmartLynx Airlines Malta (LYX, Malta Int’l) has announced it will add five A330-300 makeshift freighters, converted from passenger aircraft through the removal of seats, with deliveries due by the end of June 2021.

“We understand that eventually, the long-haul cargo market will return to the pre-COVID levels, so SmartLynx Airlines plan to return the Airbus A330 aircraft to operate on long-haul passenger flights once that time comes. We believe that our low-cost structure and great efficiency will allow us to create competition to market veterans,” Chief Executive of parent company SmartLynx Airlines Zygimantas Surintas said.

While the airline did not disclose the identity of the five aircraft, four will be dry-leased from CDB Aviation.

The A330s will be SmartLynx’s first widebody aircraft. The Maltese airline currently operates one A320-200 and one A321-200, and is due to shortly take two A321-200(P2F)s, which will become the group’s first dedicated freighters. The Latvian parent carrier operates three A320-200s and seven A321-200s, while SmartLynx Airlines Estonia (MYX, Tallinn Lennart Meri
