Large vans usually enjoy long lifecycles, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get upgrades. The second generation of the VW Crafter – originally introduced in 2017 – has been refreshed for 2024 with modern technology and new features inside the cabin.

Unlike the usual practice with facelifts, the 2024 VW Crafter is a spitting image of its predecessor. However, the interior has been overhauled, featuring a redesigned dashboard that brings VW’s van more in line with Volkswagen’s passenger lineup.

The standard Digital Cockpit combines a digital instrument cluster and a 10.3-inch infotainment display that can be optionally upgraded to 12.9 inches. The new version of the MIB infotainment features fresh graphics and integrates ChatGPT for responding to natural voice commands.

The Crafter also adopts a multifunction steering wheel with physical buttons, similar to other VW products. Other changes include the redesigned gear selector for the automatic gearbox, a relocated electronic parking brake, and redesigned climate vents. These allowed VW designers to free up more space for storage on the center console, making for a more practical interior.

All trims of the updated VW Crafter will come standard with an ADAS suite including Front Assist (Autonomous Emergency Braking including Cyclist and Pedestrian Monitoring), Lane Assist (lane keeping system), Dynamic Road Sign Display, a speed limiter, and acoustic Park Distance Control (rear sensors). More sophisticated systems like the Travel Assist will be available as an option.

VW didn’t mention any changes to the trim structure and powertrain lineup of the 2024 VW Crafter so we assume they will be carried over from the existing model. The current model is available with different versions of the 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine producing anywhere between 108 hp (80 kW / 109 PS) and 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) in RWD and AWD flavors. There is also a fully electric option – the VW e-Crafter – with a single electric motor producing 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and a 35,8 kWh battery pack.

Pre-sales of the updated VW Crafter will commence in mid-April. It is safe to assume that the Grand California campervan will receive similar updates in the future.

Rivals of the VW Crafter in the large van segment include the all-new Renault Master and Nissan Interstar twins, plus the Stellantis team including the Fiat Ducato, Citroen Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, Opel / Vauxhall Movano, and Toyota ProAce Max.
