$5M solar project temporarily closing Decatur Civic Center parking lot

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A $5 million solar canopy project will block off the Decatur Civic Center parking lot until the end of July.

The project involves installing solar-powered parking canopies to cover two-thirds of the lot. City officials say they will look similar to the image below:

Decatur officials expect the new panels to save the city $100,000 in energy annually. They said the project comes at no cost to the City.

The fenced-off lot will reopen gradually as more construction is completed. In the meantime, drivers are advised to park in the following designated areas, rather than the Civic Center lot:
