The Importance of Afterschool Programs Highlighted During Nationwide ‘Lights On Afterschool’ Events
In an effort to underscore the vital role of afterschool programs in fostering academic success and community engagement, approximately one million individuals participated in “Lights On Afterschool” events held across the United States this fall. Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, these events featured diverse activities that showcased the benefits of afterschool programs. From hands-on science experiments in Alabama to cultural celebrations in California, the events aimed to unify communities in support of continued funding and accessibility for such programs.
Afterschool programs offer children and adolescents a safe environment that promotes learning, social interaction, and personal development after the school day concludes. Recent research has indicated that these programs not only enhance academic performance but also help children develop vital life skills. The offerings of most afterschool programs typically include academic assistance, mentorship opportunities, healthy meals, and exposure to subjects like STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), as well as college and career guidance.
This year’s “Lights On Afterschool” events were marked by notable participation, with landmarks across the nation illuminated in vibrant yellow and blue colors as a sign of solidarity. Noteworthy buildings such as Niagara Falls and the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans contributed to this visual representation of support. For the second consecutive year, renowned entertainer Usher has taken on the role of honorary chair, amplifying the importance of afterschool programs.
Jodi Grant, the executive director of the Afterschool Alliance, emphasized the critical need for these programs, stating, “Afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and give working families peace of mind that their children are supervised and learning after the school day ends.” However, she also highlighted a stark disparity: a significant number of families that seek afterschool options for their children—approximately 29.6 million—are unable to access them due to financial or logistical barriers. A concerning statistic from a 2025 study commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance found that while many parents desire these services, less than 7 million children are currently enrolled in structured afterschool programs.
Despite the evident necessity for afterschool initiatives, the current political environment poses challenges. Proposals from the federal government, particularly under the Trump administration, have suggested cuts to educational funding, which could further limit financial resources for afterschool programming.
Grant articulated a clear call to action for increased investment from government entities, businesses, and philanthropic organizations to ensure that every child has access to high-quality afterschool programs. As the demand for these programs continues to grow, advocates remain hopeful for a future where every child can reap the benefits of afterschool learning opportunities.
