Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind has confirmed that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has released its Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Atlantic Shores Project 1 and 2
Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind chief executive Joris Veldhoven said, “We are encouraged by this further progress and are another step closer to delivering New Jersey’s first offshore wind projects.
“We appreciate BOEM’s thorough environmental evaluation and recognize the significance of this milestone in reaching the Garden State’s goal of 100% clean energy by 2035.”
New Jersey has established the goal of 100% clean energy by 2035 and 11 GW of offshore wind power by 2040. Atlantic Shores Project 1 is the largest offshore wind project in the state and third largest project awarded in the US.
Atlantic Shores Project 1 has an offtake agreement to generate 1,510 MW of offshore wind energy, enough to power over 700,000 homes. Combined with Project 2, the entire lease area could generate about 2.8 GW of electricity.
Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind submitted a combined construction and operations plan for the wind energy facilities and associated export cables, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project 1 and 2 being collectively referred to as the Atlantic Shores South Wind Project.
The combined proposal includes up to 200 total wind turbines and up to ten offshore substations with subsea transmission cables potentially making landfall in Atlantic City and Sea Girt. The lease area covers approximately 102,124 acres and is approximately 8.7 miles offshore New Jersey at its closest point.
The FEIS for Atlantic Shores Project 1 and 2 will be published in the Federal Register in the coming days.
Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind is a 50:50 joint venture between Shell New Energies and EDF-RE Offshore Development.
