Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Opens Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Round Rock

As part of a strategic expansion, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Round Rock, Texas, is set to unveil Williamson County’s first and only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on June 3, 2025. This significant development comes at a time when Central Texas is experiencing considerable population growth, particularly among families, highlighting the need for advanced healthcare facilities in the region.

The newly established NICU is designed to provide comprehensive care for newborns who are critically ill or require specialized medical support, including life-sustaining interventions. Prior to this expansion, the Round Rock facility did not have a NICU, necessitating transfers of vulnerable infants to distant hospitals for critical care. According to Dierdre Martin-Ross, director of women’s services at Baylor Scott & White Health, this new unit will alleviate the burden on local families by offering them access to high-quality neonatal services nearby.

The NICU will feature ten private patient rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology while ensuring family comfort and privacy. The facility is designed thoughtfully to accommodate the needs of families during their infants’ hospital stays. Each room will include amenities such as pull-out sofas for overnight family visits, refrigerators for storing breast milk and formula, and recliners with curtains for privacy during feeding times. Additionally, a designated area for twins accommodates families with multiple births.

Recognizing the crucial role of parental involvement in a newborn’s recovery, Baylor Scott & White has implemented 24/7 visiting hours. Families will benefit from the innovative AngelEye video monitoring system, enabling parents to observe their babies’ progress anytime, even if they are not physically present in the unit. This technology promotes parental engagement and peace of mind during what can be an incredibly stressful time.

In a bid to foster family-centered care, the NICU also includes dedicated rooms that allow families to stay overnight with their infants as they prepare for discharge. Martin-Ross emphasizes that this provision ensures immediate access to healthcare professionals should any concerns arise before the transition home.

Looking ahead, Baylor Scott & White plans to establish a dedicated transportation team at the end of June. This team will facilitate prompt transfers of critically ill infants from other medical facilities to the new NICU, ensuring that timely care is accessible to those in need.

The opening of this Level III NICU marks a significant milestone not only for Baylor Scott & White Medical Center but also for the entire Williamson County community, reinforcing the commitment to improve healthcare access and outcomes for families in the region.
