Blue Ant Studios has officially announced the commencement of production for its original animated preschool series “Tralala,” during the ongoing Kidscreen Summit. This project marks a significant collaboration between Canada and New Zealand and consists of 52 seven-minute episodes, with an anticipated delivery date set for 2026. The animation will be a joint effort between Blue Ant Studios and Stretchy, intended for broadcast on CBC and Sky New Zealand.
“Tralala,” which is presently a working title, is crafted by Harry Sinclair, a recognized name in children’s programming known for his BAFTA-nominated series, “Kiri and Lou.” In hallmark fashion, Sinclair’s latest endeavor promises to weave together music, humor, and warmth, creating a narrative landscape that reflects the imagination and charm he is celebrated for. As part of the announcement, Blue Ant Studios emphasized its commitment to fostering partnerships, revealing plans to engage in pre-sales discussions and collaborations at the Kidscreen Summit.
The series is financially supported by prominent funding bodies such as the Shaw Rocket Fund, The Independent Production Fund’s Cogeco TV Production Program, the Canada Media Fund, and NZ On Air. Blue Ant Studios will retain global distribution rights for the series, suggesting a concerted effort to penetrate international markets.
“Tralala” introduces audiences to its titular character, a spirited seven-year-old frog who resides with her father, Sid, in a charming blue cottage nestled in the countryside. The show transforms everyday experiences into fantastical adventures infused with song, showcasing the rich inner world of Tralala, who engages with diverse characters crafted from both her imagination and her surroundings. These enchanting companions include Batty, a stylish bat; Pasilio, a modest tree; and Hildegard, a quirky talking hill. Together, they embody the joys of childhood and the wonders of nurturing an imaginative spirit.
Diane Rankin, Executive Vice President of Content Development and Commercial Strategy at Blue Ant Studios, praised “Tralala” for its originality and inclusive messaging geared towards young audiences. “We were immediately taken with its charm. Playful, original, and inclusive kids’ programming like ‘Tralala’ represents a vibrant area for our Kids, Family & YA division,” Rankin remarked. The excitement surrounding the series also resonated with Fiona Copland, Producer at Stretchy, who highlighted the positive themes intended for families. “We wanted to create a joyful series that celebrates the delight of childhood and brings positivity to families,” Copland stated.
The production team boasts impressive credentials, including Antony Elworthy, who has contributed to acclaimed projects such as Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning “Pinocchio” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.” Julianna Cox, known for her work on “Coraline” and “Shaun the Sheep,” will oversee animation direction. The soundtrack will feature original compositions by New Zealand’s iconic songwriter and musician, Don McGlashan.
Executive Producers from Blue Ant Studios include Mark J.W. Bishop, Matthew Hornburg, Diane Rankin, AJ Trauth, and Donna Luke, while Harry Sinclair and Fiona Copland represent Stretchy. At CBC, key figures include Sally Catto, Marie McCann, and Drew Mullin, who are integral to the series’ development and production oversight.
As “Tralala” begins its journey towards release, it stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit of children’s programming, promising to delight and inspire young audiences across the globe.
