Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County Unveils Community-Inspired Library Cards
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio — In an innovative move to engage the community and celebrate local creativity, the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County is set to introduce artistically designed library cards featuring artwork created by community members. This initiative, aptly named the “Great Library Draw Off,” aims to foster a deeper connection between the library and its patrons while highlighting the artistic talents within the community.
The library’s recent campaign called for submissions from all demographics—children, teens, and adults—encouraging participants to express their creativity through art. During the months of March and April, residents were invited to submit their designs, which were subsequently narrowed down to ten finalists. The community actively participated in the selection process, casting over 700 votes to determine the top three designs that will be featured on the new library cards.
Sarita Asawa, the library’s community outreach coordinator, detailed the selection process and its inclusivity. “We had three different categories of winners. There were two in the children’s category and one for teens and adults,” said Asawa, emphasizing the library’s commitment to celebrating creativity across all age groups. This approach not only enriches the library’s offerings but also creates a sense of ownership and pride among local artists.
The library has announced plans to print a total of 1,500 cards, distributing 500 of each winning design. Patrons looking to acquire the new cards will incur a nominal fee of for replacements; however, individuals who do not currently possess a library card can obtain one for free, encouraging wider participation from the community.
These special edition library cards are set to become available in June, coinciding with the launch of the library’s popular summer reading program. This timing reflects the library’s ongoing dedication to promoting literacy and learning during the summer months, an initiative that attracts numerous participants each year.
The introduction of community-designed library cards marks an exciting development in the evolving role of public libraries as cultural hubs. By involving local residents in this initiative, the library not only showcases the artistic talent within Jefferson County but also reinforces its position as a community-oriented institution dedicated to fostering creativity and lifelong learning.
