New Dental Clinic Opens at Ohio State’s Outpatient Care East
In exciting news for community health, the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has officially opened its newest dental clinic at the Outpatient Care East location. This new facility represents a significant expansion of health services, tapping into an urgent need for accessible dental care in the community.
The dental clinic is part of Ohio State’s Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) initiative, which aims to provide affordable health care services to underserved populations. FQHCs receive federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration, ensuring that they can offer necessary medical services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. The clinic’s opening builds upon Ohio State’s ongoing efforts since 2012, when it first established the Total Health and Wellness program, a nurse practitioner-led primary care practice under the Ohio State College of Nursing.
A Comprehensive Health Care Approach
This new venture will provide comprehensive health services that include not only dental care but also mental health services, pharmacy, and vision care, making it a one-stop shop for all health needs. “Our mission from day one has focused on the whole person’s health, addressing not just immediate care but also chronic conditions and long-term well-being,” noted Candy Rinehart, the director of the Total Health Care Center. “We’re committed to building trust within the community while improving health outcomes through our interdisciplinary, team-based model.”
The addition of the dental clinic greatly enhances the existing services available at Ohio State’s FQHC. With dental care now offered, patients can expect to receive integrated and holistic medical attention. This model is proven to improve health outcomes and raises the quality of care for vulnerable populations.
According to Ryan Haley, senior director of ambulatory services at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, “Working with the Total Health Care Center using the FQHC model allows us to effectively address healthcare gaps that often affect medically underserved communities.” The expansion comes at a time when many individuals face barriers to accessing quality dental care, reinforcing the significance of this new facility.
Community Support and Funding
One crucial factor in the clinic’s establishment was the community and state support. Rinehart has long been an advocate for integrating dental services into the existing healthcare framework. Thanks to collaborations with local officials, including State Senator Hearcel F. Craig, Ohio State secured .2 million in state funding to make the dental clinic a reality. Senator Craig expressed his commitment to improving the quality of life for Columbus residents, stressing the importance of good dental health, especially for children. “Investing in this clinic not only supports the health of our neighbors but also creates opportunities for a brighter future for our community,” he said.
A Welcoming Environment for Patients
The Outpatient Care East Dental Clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and will employ a dentist and hygienist from the Ohio State College of Dentistry, ready to welcome patients into six new treatment spaces. As Matthew Messina, an associate professor at the College of Dentistry, pointed out, “Good oral care is essential for overall health. We are excited to collaborate with the medical center to provide dental services in a compassionate and comforting environment. We believe this will greatly benefit adults and children alike on their path toward improved oral health.”
The new clinic is already open and booking appointments. Offering both preventive and urgent dental care, the facility aims to ensure that every patient receives holistic attention tailored to their individual health needs.
Looking Ahead
As the dental clinic at Outpatient Care East begins to serve the community, it signals a growing trend among healthcare providers to broaden their services beyond traditional models. By integrating dental and medical care, the clinic aims to address the pressing needs within the community, particularly for those lacking essential health services.
With Ohio State continuing to expand its offerings, it is redefining the landscape of accessible healthcare in Columbus and beyond. The dental clinic not only serves a critical need but also represents a collaborative effort toward creating a healthier community for all, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to achieve and maintain good health.
