New Amur Tiger Cubs Born at Roosevelt Park Zoo: A Step Forward for Conservation Efforts

On May 19, Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot, North Dakota, welcomed the birth of four critically endangered Amur tiger cubs. This significant event marks the second litter for mother Zoya and the first offspring for father Finn. The birth of these cubs provides a promising contribution towards the global conservation efforts aimed at protecting Amur tigers, who are currently classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.

Dr. Logan Wood, Director of Roosevelt Park Zoo, expressed optimism about the cubs’ arrival. “These cubs represent a major, positive step forward in our efforts to support the global population of Amur tigers,” he stated. He emphasized that the successful birth and nurturing of the cubs is reflective of the dedicated care provided by the zoo’s team. Presently, the mother and her cubs are not on public display as they are bonding and ensuring the cubs gain the strength necessary for their initial explorations.

As the cubs begin to open their eyes and strengthen their limbs, they will gradually gain access to the tiger exhibit’s day room. This specially designed space includes heated floors, providing optimal comfort for the young animals. Meanwhile, Finn, the father, continues to roam freely in the outdoor enclosures to maintain his health and well-being.

Roosevelt Park Zoo is committed to keeping the public informed about the development of the cubs through updates on their social media channels and various news articles. The four cubs will officially make their public debut on World Tiger Day, July 29. This event promises to be educational, featuring opportunities for guests to learn about the conservation of the world’s largest cat and how they can assist in these efforts. On this day, the zoo will also announce the names of the cubs and host family-friendly activities.

In conjunction with the cubs’ debut, the zoo will release a children’s book titled “A Family For Zoya: The True Story of an Endangered Cub,” authored by Debra Kim Wolf. The book chronicles Zoya’s remarkable journey, from her beginnings at the Philadelphia Zoo to her successful integration into a family of Sumatran tigers at the Oklahoma City Zoo, before finally arriving at Roosevelt Park Zoo to establish her own family.

As the zoo releases this book and showcases the adorable cubs, it hopes to further inspire the community’s involvement in wildlife conservation efforts. The story of the Amur tiger serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by endangered species and the collective responsibility humans bear in preserving their future.
