NAMI New River Valley Launches Family-to-Family Mental Health Education Program
ROANOKE, Va. — The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) New River Valley has announced the launch of its Family-to-Family Mental Health Education Program, set to commence on March 12, 2025. This initiative seeks to provide essential resources and education for family members and friends of adults dealing with mental health challenges.
The Family-to-Family program is a comprehensive eight-session course designed to equip participants with knowledge about prevalent mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The course aims not only to enhance understanding of these issues but also to empower attendees with advocacy skills and strategies for self-care.
Nancy Bodenhorn, a co-leader of the program, shared her personal connection to the cause, stating, “I was a teen when my older brother was diagnosed with a mental illness. My family came to a good place after much floundering, and we could have used a class like this.” Such testimonials highlight the program’s potential to support families navigating difficult journeys related to mental health.
The program is unique in that it is taught by trained family members who have firsthand experience supporting a loved one with a mental health condition. This peer-led approach ensures that participants receive guidance that is not only evidence-based but also empathetic and personal. Bodenhorn emphasized her motivation to lead the class as a tribute to her brother and parents, reflecting a commitment to “pay it forward” for those seeking support amid the complexities of mental illness in families.
Classes will be held in person at the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church located at 107 Main Street, Christiansburg, every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., running through April 30. NAMI New River Valley encourages those with family members or friends affected by mental illness to participate, as the program promises valuable insights and community support. Interested individuals are advised to register early due to limited space. Registration can be completed by contacting NAMI New River Valley via email at NAMInrvVA@gmail.com or by phone at 540-585-1627.
