Flathead High School Theatre Set to Present Heartfelt Adaptation of “Harriet the Spy”
The excitement is brewing at Flathead High School as the talented student actors prepare to bring the beloved children’s classic, “Harriet the Spy,” to life on stage on November 20 and 21. This family-friendly production promises to be a delightful experience for audiences of all ages, intertwining humor with valuable life lessons that continue to resonate in today’s world.
At the heart of the story is 11-year-old Harriet M. Welsch, an aspiring writer whose acute observations about her friends, classmates, and even unsuspecting strangers find their way into her trusty notebook. However, chaos ensues when Harriet’s private musings accidentally fall into the hands of her classmates, leading to a series of consequences that challenge her friendships and self-reflection. The play elegantly explores themes of responsibility, honesty, and the journey toward making amends.
Originally penned by author Louise Fitzhugh in 1964, “Harriet the Spy” has stood the test of time, carving a niche in children’s literature as a poignant exploration of childhood friendship and the challenges of growing up. Adapted for the stage by Leslie Brody, the play invites audiences to consider the often complex dynamics of relationships, especially during the formative years of adolescence.
Director Wendy Putzler, who is also an Acting 3 International Baccalaureate teacher, emphasizes the importance of empathy: “Sometimes stepping into another person’s shoes is the best gift we can give to another, but it can be difficult to do. Harriet is a keen observer of the world and learns that to be kind, she has to use those observations to share kindness.” Through Harriet’s journey, the audience is encouraged to reflect on their own actions and the impact of their words.
This production is a labor of love brought to life by the hardworking students of the Acting 3 class, where young thespians hone their craft and collaborate on a full-length production. “Harriet the Spy” serves as a unique opportunity for these students—most of whom are seniors—to refine their theater skills, from character development to stage design. The process of embodying multiple characters allows them to showcase their versatility and creativity.
Putzler shares her pride in guiding these young actors through their creative journey. “It has been a gift to see them create each character in new and different ways. You will enjoy what they have created,” she says, highlighting the rich array of personalities that will grace the stage. The talented cast includes Lily Amundson, Sophie Hebert, Sam Randall, and many others who bring depth and enthusiasm to their roles while connecting with the core messages of the story.
In addition to the outstanding cast, the technical crew has put in countless hours to ensure the production shines. These young artists are responsible for creating the captivating set, sound, and lighting that will enhance the overall experience for the audience. Their dedication showcases the collaborative spirit of theater and the importance of teamwork in the arts.
Performances will kick off at 6:27 p.m. in the David M. Hashley Theater, located at 644 Fourth Ave. W., Kalispell. With ticket prices set at for adults and for children, students, and senior citizens—while elementary school students enjoy complimentary admission—this is an affordable outing for families.
