Governor Hochul Announces Financial Assistance for Heating Costs Amidst Upcoming Winter
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As New York braces for the onset of winter, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced crucial financial assistance for heating expenses through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). This initiative is designed to help families manage the rising costs associated with heating their homes during the colder months.
In a recent statement, Governor Hochul expressed her concerns regarding delays in federal funding, which have hindered the timely rollout of this essential program. “As temperatures have already begun to drop, it’s disgraceful that the federal government took so long to provide federal funding for critical heating assistance for families across the state,” she remarked, emphasizing the urgency for timely financial support.
HEAP, administered by the New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, experienced a month-long delay due to the recent government shutdown. This program, which receives its funding from federal sources, has a significant impact on the lives of many New Yorkers facing financial challenges.
Governor Hochul reiterated the importance of HEAP for working-class families, stating, “Hardworking New Yorkers count on this assistance to help with their utility bills and keep their homes warm during the cold winter months. That’s why I fought hard to restore this funding and will continue to do everything in my power to help New York families apply for additional state funding to bring down energy costs.”
Eligible households can receive a maximum of 6 per month to assist with heating costs. However, the exact amount of assistance is determined by various factors, including household size, the presence of vulnerable individuals, income levels, and the type of heating source utilized. For instance, a family of four can have a maximum gross monthly income of ,680, translating to an annual gross income of ,165, to qualify for this assistance.
Last winter, HEAP provided support to over 1.5 million households, highlighting the program’s pivotal role in ensuring residents have access to necessary heating during harsh winter months.
New Yorkers looking to apply for HEAP or seeking information about eligibility can do so through multiple avenues. Applications can be submitted online, via mail, or in person at local social services departments. Additionally, older adults may contact the NY Connects helpline at 1-800-342-9871 to obtain guidance regarding their applications.
It is also noteworthy that individuals who qualify for other benefits from the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) may be automatically enrolled in HEAP, streamlining the process for those in need.
As winter approaches, the HEAP initiative represents a vital lifeline for many New Yorkers facing financial difficulties, ensuring that they can maintain warm and comfortable living conditions during the colder months.
