American Family Children’s Hospital to Expand Pediatric and Cardiac Care Facilities

MADISON, Wis. — In a significant move to enhance pediatric healthcare services, American Family Children’s Hospital announced on Monday its plans to add 24 additional beds dedicated to pediatric and cardiac intensive care. This expansion reflects the hospital’s commitment to addressing the increasing demand for specialized medical care among children in the region.

The expansion will take place on the vacant sixth floor of the hospital, which has remained unoccupied since its inception in 2007. The new space will feature 14 beds specifically for medical surgical pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients and 10 beds designated for pediatric cardiac care. This strategic addition not only addresses current healthcare needs but also prepares the facility for future demands, ensuring that American Family Children’s Hospital can provide critical support as patient numbers rise.

American Family Children’s Hospital, located in Madison, is renowned for being one of only two level 1 trauma centers in Wisconsin, a designation that allows it to cater to the most severe cases among children. The anticipated expansion will increase the total bed capacity to 131, expanding upon the current 21-bed PICU. Hospital leadership has emphasized that this augmentation will improve flexibility and provide essential space to accommodate seasonal fluctuations in patient needs.

Construction for this expansion is expected to commence in the next year, with the targeted opening date set for 2027.
