Swap seeds and get ready for the growing season

February 13, 2024 | by magnews24.com

It’s time to start thinking about Spring and getting the garden ready again for the warm months ahead.

Exeter Seed Bank are organising a Seed Swap on Sunday and everyone is welcome to attend.

Exeter Seed Swap takes place at Positive Light Projects in Sidwell Street, on Sunday (18 February) from 10.30am until 2.30pm. Exeter City Council supports Exeter Positive Light Projects.

People are encouraged to bring along spare seeds that are within their use-by-date and swap them for others. Those that don’t have any seeds can still attend the free event and pick up seeds to start their growing journey. Seeds are free but donations are welcome.

There will be seeds provided by Bristol Seed Bank, Heritage Seed Library and individual growers. There will be face and limb painting for children, a demonstration of making baskets from straw and stalls from Devon Wildlife Trust, Agriton, Woodland Trust, South West Seed Sovereignty, and Incredible Vegetables.

Mandy Biscoe, Co-director of the Exeter Seed Bank, said: “Seed saving and sharing is a great way to encourage growing and brings communities together. It contributes to food resilience and gets us to think about ways we can enhance the biodiversity of our green spaces.”

Since 2020, Exeter Seed Bank (ESB) has created an ongoing programme of events and activities that follow the seed calendar (sowing, growing, harvesting and collecting of seeds). They collect seeds within the community and from reputable seed suppliers that work the area’s soils. They are keen to discover local varieties of seeds to re-introduce diversity into the local environment and advise on what plants are good to grow and resilient in the face of climate change.

This event has been made possible through support from Exeter Culture and Agriton.
