Revitalization of a Craftsman-Style Bungalow in Moorestown, NJ: A Fusion of Tradition and Personalization

Nestled in a picturesque neighborhood of Moorestown, New Jersey, this renovated craftsman-style bungalow stands as a testament to thoughtful interior design. Located on a serene, tree-lined street, the home combines historic charm with modern functionality, thanks to a series of renovations that expanded its footprint while respecting its original architectural character. Libby Rawes, an interior designer at Sharp and Grey Interiors, highlights that the extensive renovations maintained the bungalow’s defining millwork and stylistic details that contribute to its unique allure.

The residence is now home to a vibrant young family comprising two little girls, their friendly black Labrador, and two spirited kittens. Rawes notes that the family’s lifestyle is enriched by music, travel, and a love for outdoor activities. “Their requests centered on creating a home reflective of their personalities that would serve as a backdrop for cherished family activities,” she shares. Key elements of their vision included a desire for spaces that were inviting and accessible, abandoning the notion of formal rooms that discouraged everyday use.

The family sought to blend traditional English cottage themes with modern elements that resonated with both parents’ backgrounds. One parent, influenced by international travels, and the other who brings a passion for music, desired a harmonious living space that embodied both traditional aesthetics and a contemporary flair. Rawes describes the aim as creating environments where the family could bond over leisurely activities like reading, playing music, and completing puzzles.

The scope of work undertaken by Sharp and Grey included the redesign of several key areas: the family room, dining room, living room or parlor, entryway, and a newly crafted “snug” area in a previously vacant hallway. The project involved minor structural modifications and the installation of custom cabinetry, enhancing the overall ambiance and utility of these spaces.

The guiding principle behind the design was to create a bridging narrative between the divergent, yet complementary, tastes of the homeowners. The result is an eclectic and curated environment, layered with rich textures, deep colors, and unexpected elements that radiate personal significance. “The finished product encapsulates a moody, eclectic vibe, celebrating both tradition and innovative design,” Rawes states.

Spanning approximately one year from conception to completion, the project was met with enthusiastic acclaim from the family. In an expression of their satisfaction, the clients reportedly reacted with spontaneous joy, leading them to request the continuation of their collaboration with Sharp and Grey for a phase two of the project. This renewed partnership speaks to the lasting impact of thoughtful design and its ability to foster a meaningful family environment.
